Addis Ababa Introduces Draft Directive Banning Early School Registrations

The Addis Ababa Education Bureau has introduced a draft directive prohibiting schools from conducting registration for the upcoming academic year before the current school term officially concludes.

Unveiled as part of a broader push to enhance educational quality and fairness, the draft “General Education Accreditation and Renewal Directive” sets strict boundaries on institutional practices. Policymakers designed the regulations to curb rushed administrative cycles and protect the integrity of the ongoing academic calendar for both new and returning students.

Under the new provisions, schools are explicitly barred from utilizing summer reinforcement programs as a pretext to launch regular coursework or prematurely detach students from their active learning environments. Officials emphasized that the transition between academic years must follow a standardized timeline to ensure students receive adequate rest and complete their current curricula without disruption.

Furthermore, the draft outlines institutional accreditation reforms, stipulating that school operating licenses will now be valid for two years. Newly established institutions must achieve at least an 85 percent compliance rating against national educational standards to secure preliminary accreditation, raising the benchmark for institutional accountability across the capital.

The directive also reinforces inclusivity by mandating that all registered schools accept students unconditionally. Institutions are prohibited from discriminating based on academic performance, gender, ethnicity, or religion, ensuring equitable access to education for all children in the city.
