Ethiopia’sPolice Arrest Officials After Assault on Mother and Son

​The Addis Ababa Police Commission has launched a formal investigation into a disturbing incident of physical assault and property destruction in Woreda 05 of the Nifas Silk Lafto sub-city. The case, which occurred in the neighborhood commonly known as “Kaba Gulit,” involves a violent attack directed at a mother and her son. Authorities confirmed that the legal process is underway to ensure accountability for those involved.

​According to official police reports, five suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the case. The group reportedly includes two police officers and three local district (Woreda) officials. The involvement of law enforcement and administrative personnel has drawn significant public attention, as the suspects are accused of abusing their positions of power to carry out the assault.

​The primary victim, identified as W/ro Enat Abebe, sustained physical injuries during the confrontation. In addition to the physical harm, the suspects allegedly destroyed her livelihood by pouring out approximately 60 liters of traditional liquor (Areke). This act of property destruction has left the family facing immediate financial hardship, compounding the trauma of the physical attack.

​Police records indicate that the incident took place on March 6, 2026. Following the outcry, the Addis Ababa Police Department issued a statement promising a transparent investigation. They have pledged to make the full findings of the probe available to the public once the evidence gathering and witness testimonies are completed.

​In the wake of the attack, the victim’s family and concerned community members are calling for more than just criminal charges. They are demanding fair compensation for the physical injuries sustained and the economic loss of the destroyed goods. As the investigation continues, the case serves as a focal point for discussions regarding the protection of citizens’ rights and the conduct of local authorities.
