Ethiopian-Born Dentist in Maryland Faces Sexual Assault Charges

A dental professional originally from Ethiopia, practicing in Silver Spring, Maryland, is currently facing multiple criminal charges following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a patient. The Montgomery County Police Department’s Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) announced the charges against 35-year-old Dr. Ermias Semay, suggesting there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.

The investigation began earlier this month on Monday, March 2, 2026, when an adult female patient reported two separate incidents of sexual assault. According to the victim’s statement, the encounters occurred within the treatment room while the dental hygienist was absent. Following a preliminary inquiry, detectives stated they were able to find sufficient evidence to corroborate the victim’s allegations.

Dr. Semay was taken into custody last week and is currently facing three counts of third-degree sexual offense and five counts of second-degree assault. The police report details that the suspect allegedly waited for other staff members to leave the room before engaging in the illicit contact. One specific incident cited in the charging documents dates back to February 19, detailing inappropriate physical contact during a routine procedure.

During the course of the investigation, detectives uncovered a similar report filed against Dr. Semay in 2018. According to law enforcement records, that prior allegation resulted in a temporary suspension of his medical license. This history has led investigators to believe that there may be a pattern of behavior extending over several years across his practice in the Silver Spring area.

The Montgomery County Police Department is urging anyone who may have been a victim or who possesses information regarding these incidents to contact the Special Victims Investigations Division. As the legal proceedings move forward, the case remains an active investigation to ensure all potential victims are identified and heard.
