Ethiopian Airlines Expands Cargo Fleet Through Strategic Lease Agreement with AerCap

Ethiopian Airlines has officially entered into a strategic lease agreement with the Dublin-based global aviation leader AerCap for two Boeing 777-300ERSF converted freighters. This landmark deal marks a significant milestone for the continent’s aviation industry, as Ethiopian Airlines is set to become the first African carrier to operate this specific aircraft model. The delivery of these advanced aircraft is scheduled to take place during the second quarter of 2028.

The conversion process from passenger to cargo configuration is being spearheaded by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). These twin-engine aircraft, known for their efficiency and high volume capacity, received official certification from U.S. and Israeli aviation authorities last year. This technical backing ensures that the “Big Twin” freighters meet rigorous international safety and performance standards before entering service within the Ethiopian fleet.

Mr. Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, emphasized that the acquisition of these aircraft is a core component of the carrier’s long-term growth strategy. By integrating these high-capacity freighters, the airline aims to significantly boost its cargo throughput and operational efficiency. This expansion is expected to play a vital role in accelerating trade activities across the region and strengthening Ethiopia’s position as a global logistics hub.

This partnership builds upon an existing technical relationship between Ethiopian Airlines and IAI. The two organizations previously collaborated at the airline’s maintenance facility in Addis Ababa to convert Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. By moving toward the more modern 777-300ERSF model, the airline is demonstrating a commitment to fleet modernization and the adoption of cutting-edge technology to stay competitive in the global air freight market.

While the agreement promises enhanced logistical capabilities, it also highlights the growing demand for dedicated cargo solutions in a post-pandemic economy. As the aviation industry continues to navigate fluctuating fuel prices and environmental regulations, the efficiency of the 777-300ERSF will be a critical factor for the airline. This strategic move aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ “Vision 2035,” focusing on sustainable growth and multi-hub operations.
