Music Producer Kamuzu Kassa Among Prosperity Party’s Diverse 2018 Candidates

The ruling Prosperity Party (PP) has officially begun introducing its candidates for Ethiopia’s upcoming 2018 General Election, revealing a roster that spans various professional and social backgrounds.

As the campaign gains momentum, the party is presenting a mix of seasoned government officials and prominent public figures to contest seats at both local and federal levels. This rollout is part of a broader strategy to mobilize voters across diverse constituencies.

In Addis Ababa, the Yeka Sub-City branch has generated significant headlines by nominating the renowned music composer and producer Kamuzu Kassa as a candidate for the city council. Kassa, a household name in the Ethiopian music industry, is transitioning from the creative arts into the political arena, representing a high-profile attempt by the party to engage with urban youth and the cultural sector. His candidacy was announced alongside former ETV journalist W/ro Beshatu Tolomariam and Ato Shume Gizaw, a farmer.

While the party frames this recruitment as a move toward greater inclusivity, the selection of celebrities has drawn mixed reactions from political observers. Some critics argue that fielding high-profile figures like Kassa is a populist tactic designed to leverage “star power” rather than legislative expertise. There are concerns among some analysts that prioritizing cultural fame over political experience could potentially weaken the technical capacity of local councils to handle complex administrative challenges.
Furthermore, opposition voices have raised questions about the fairness of the electoral landscape, suggesting that celebrity candidates enjoy disproportionate media visibility. Skeptics emphasize that the focus should remain on substantive policy debates rather than the personal popularity of the nominees. These critics argue that the effectiveness of a representative must be judged by their political platform and commitment to governance rather than their previous professional acclaim in the arts or media.
Despite these debates, the Prosperity Party continues to move forward with a heavy-hitting lineup at the federal level as well. Prominent female leaders, including Dr. Mekdes Daba, W/ro Aisha Mohammed, and Dr. Lelise Neme, have been put forward for the House of Peoples’ Representatives. As the March 15, 2018, announcement circulates, the public remains divided on whether this unconventional blend of candidates will lead to a more representative government or if it is primarily a strategic campaign maneuver.
