UAE provides support to contain Ebola outbreak

The UAE has dispatched urgent medical aid via the UAE Aid Agency to support the World Health Organization (WHO) in containing a dangerous Ebola outbreak in Africa. Following directives from President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the financial and logistical support targets the highly contagious Bundibugyo cross-border strain, which threatens regional stability.

This rapid intervention comes in response to alarming data from the WHO highlighting the rapid transmission of the virus across age groups. Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State, affirmed that the UAE is determined to fulfill its global humanitarian responsibility by coordinating with international partners to halt the epidemic before it escalates further.

The assistance package includes approved vaccines, essential medications, and critical medical supplies designed to reinforce local healthcare infrastructures. The UAE is actively collaborating with international and regional organizations to optimize healthcare delivery and fortify designated treatment centers in the worst-hit zones.

The surge in aid arrives at a critical juncture as WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recently warned that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo remains out of control. Global health officials face severe challenges in tracking the virus, emphasizing that a strict 90% isolation rate of infected contacts is mandatory to successfully break the chain of transmission.

Historically, the UAE has maintained a robust role in global health security, frequently funding emergency responses to eradicate infectious diseases like polio and malaria. By bridging critical funding gaps for the WHO, this latest mission reinforces Abu Dhabi’s strategic commitment to stabilizing vulnerable communities during public health crises.
