Various media sources have reported that Pope Francis of Rome has given the church permission to approve same-sex unions. A statement about the situation was then issued by the General Office of the Bishops’ Conference of the Ethiopian Catholic Church.
The General Office states that it is against traditions that could be misinterpreted or that contradict Catholic liturgy. Nonetheless, he issued a statement saying that the Pope does not support same-sex partnerships and suggesting that the Pope’s message was misunderstood.
It went on, quoting the Bible, saying, “The Catholic Church forbids same-sex marriage in any form.”
While the church does not support or condone sin, it will not acknowledge that same-sex marriage transgresses Ethiopian customs and values.
