In a discussion about the Internet today, Amare Aregawi, the publisher of Reporter and the head of the Ethiopian Media Council, said: “Price increases and political unrest on a national level both have an impact on the revenue generated by advertising by the media. Due to this, some private media have been taken down, and those that are still operational are having issues.” He said.
“It is particularly regrettable how the print media is doing right now. Even publishing a newspaper or magazine these days is challenging. The cost of publishing has only recently increased by more than 80%. A lot of independent publishers have left as a result.
He stated: “We have not heard if we are saying that the government ought to permit financial support for the media.
Amare continued, “The arrest of journalists worries us as the Ethiopian Media Council. Even though it may not be satisfactory, we frequently contact the police and the Broadcasting Authority when journalists are detained.”
According to him, the media in Ethiopia faces issues with resources, knowledge, independence, interference, mixing with activists, and politics, and everyone involved should come together to find a solution.
