Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Isaac Herzog Forge New Era of Ethiopia-Israel Cooperation

In a significant move to bolster diplomatic and strategic relations in the Horn of Africa, Israeli President Isaac Herzog concluded a high-profile two-day official visit to Addis Ababa on February 25, 2026. The visit, characterized by high-level diplomatic talks and symbolic cultural engagements, underscores the deepening partnership between the two ancient nations.

President Herzog was warmly received at the Office of the Prime Minister by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. During their discussions, the two leaders focused on transitioning their historic friendship into modern strategic cooperation. Prime Minister Abiy highlighted that the dialogue aimed at fostering “mutually beneficial cooperation,” particularly in sectors where both nations share common interests.
The agenda for the meeting covered a wide array of technical and economic fields, including:
Agricultural Innovation: Leveraging Israeli technology for Ethiopia’s food security initiatives.

Technology and Cybersecurity: Enhancing digital infrastructure and regional security cooperation.
Health and Energy: Exploring new avenues for investment and scientific exchange.
”The relationship between Israel and Ethiopia has huge potential,” President Herzog stated following the meeting. He emphasized that the bond between the two peoples is “woven deep into the pages of history and human tradition.”

In a separate meeting, President Taye Atske Selassie emphasized the unique human connection between the two countries. He specifically noted the role of the Beta Israel (Ethiopian Jewish) community, describing them as a “living bridge” that maintains the cultural and historical heartbeat of the relationship.

President Herzog echoed these sentiments, noting that the social fabric of Israel has been significantly enriched by its citizens of Ethiopian heritage. This visit marks Herzog’s third trip to Ethiopia, further solidifying his role as a key diplomat in Israel’s renewed “push into Africa.”
Regional Diplomacy and the Peace Process
A critical portion of the high-level talks focused on regional stability. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reaffirmed Ethiopia’s long-standing diplomatic position regarding the Middle East conflict. He reiterated Ethiopia’s firm support for a “Two-State Solution,” advocating for a future where Israel and Palestine live side-by-side in peace and security.
The timing of the visit is also strategically significant, following a series of visits to Addis Ababa by other global powers, including Turkey and Italy. Observers view Herzog’s presence as a move to reinforce Israel’s footprint in a region increasingly shaped by Red Sea politics and shifting maritime alliances.
A Tribute to Ethiopian Independence
Beyond the conference rooms, President Herzog engaged in a deeply symbolic visit to the Adwa Victory Memorial. Guided by Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos and Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie, the President paid tribute to Ethiopia’s history as a beacon of African independence.
Standing at the memorial, Herzog praised the resilience and bravery of the Ethiopian people, acknowledging the Victory of Adwa as a watershed moment for freedom-seekers worldwide. “Ethiopia is a great nation and a pivotal country in Africa,” he remarked, underscoring that the shared values of liberty and sovereignty remain the bedrock of their diplomatic alliance.
