Ethiopia’s EPSS Wins Global Award for National Healthcare Digitalization

​The Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service (EPSS) has been honored as the winner of the 2025 SMB Transformation Project of the Year by the international publication ERP Today. The award recognizes “Project SMILE,” a massive digital overhaul that migrated Ethiopia’s pharmaceutical logistics from fragmented manual records to a unified SAP S/4HANA system. This transition is designed to manage the procurement and distribution of over 7,000 medical items, ensuring that life-saving supplies reach health centers with greater transparency and speed.

​This achievement marks a significant milestone for the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy, which aims to modernize the public sector. Dr. Abdulkedir Gelgelo, Director General of EPSS, noted that this project represents a “national-level reform” rather than just a technical upgrade. By digitizing the supply chain, the agency can now track inventory in real-time across its network of hubs, significantly reducing the waste and delays that often plague manual logistics in large-scale public health systems.

​The project’s success was built on a robust partnership model involving both local leadership and international expertise. While the Ethiopian government set the strategic vision, implementation was supported by global firms SEIDOR and Deloitte Consulting, with crucial backing from The Global Fund. A key pillar of the rollout was the intensive training of nearly 1,400 EPSS staff members, ensuring that the workforce was equipped to manage the new digital environment effectively.

​To put this success in a global context, the awards also highlighted diverse transformation experiences from other nations. For example, the runner-up project by Venture and Biffa in the United Kingdom demonstrated the “Green ERP” trend. While Ethiopia’s project focused on the critical task of public health logistics and accessibility, the UK project utilized similar enterprise technology to align waste management operations with environmental sustainability and carbon-tracking goals.

​In Europe, other benchmarks were set by organizations focusing on speed and scale. The firm Inetum in France showcased an “operational innovation” by completing a full digital transformation in just six months, highlighting a global trend toward rapid return on investment. Meanwhile, large-scale winners like Ryanair illustrated how digital systems can be scaled to manage complex workforces and operations across multiple borders, proving that ERP tools are adaptable to a wide range of industries and national needs.​

The project’s global recognition highlights its success in digitally integrating central and regional hubs. To maximize this impact, focusing on “last-mile” infrastructure in rural health posts offers an opportunity to eliminate data gaps and ensure seamless real-time tracking.

​Transitioning toward long-term sustainability is the next logical milestone. By cultivating a domestic pool of SAP-certified professionals, Ethiopia can move from international donor reliance to technical self-sufficiency. This investment in local talent ensures the system remains cost-effective and independent, securing the transparency and efficiency of the country’s health logistics for years to come.
