Ethiopian Woman Gives Birth to Quintuplets After 12-Year Wait

A 35-year-old woman, Bedria Adem, successfully delivered quintuplets at Haramaya University’s Hiwot Fana Hospital on Wednesday night, ending a twelve-year journey of infertility. The resident of Sofi District in the Harari Region welcomed four boys and one girl, an event that has captured local attention due to its rarity and the family’s long wait for children.

The medical team, led by Dr. Obsa Hassan, confirmed that the delivery was successful and that the mother is currently in stable condition. Dr. Obsa explained that the multiple birth was a result of ovulation induction treatment, a common medical intervention used to assist women who have difficulty conceiving. He noted that such treatments stimulate the ovaries to release multiple eggs, which often leads to the conception of more than three triplets or, in this rare case, quintuplets.

Currently, all five newborns are reported to be in good health and are receiving specialized follow-up care within the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Medical staff are monitoring the infants closely to ensure they meet developmental milestones, as multiple-birth babies often require extra nutritional and respiratory support during their first few days of life.

The news has brought immense joy to Bedria and her husband, who had spent over a decade hoping to start a family. However, the emotional high is met with the sobering reality of the logistical demands involved in caring for five infants simultaneously. The couple expressed that while the children are a “blessing,” the sudden expansion of their family presents an immediate and overwhelming challenge.

In light of these circumstances, Bedria has issued a public appeal for assistance, directed at both the Ethiopian government and the local community. She highlighted that the financial burden of providing food, clothing, and medical care for five infants at once is beyond the family’s current means. She urged well-wishers to extend a hand of support to help ensure the children grow up in a healthy and stable environment.

As the story circulates, hospital officials and local leaders have praised the medical team for the successful delivery, which underscores the growing capacity of regional healthcare facilities. Community members have already begun discussing ways to organize local aid, reflecting a spirit of solidarity for the family as they navigate this extraordinary new chapter of their lives.
