The Ethiopian Ministry of Education and the Government of China have officially signed a five-year agreement to integrate the Chinese language into Ethiopia’s national education curriculum. The strategic pact was formalized by Professor Kindeya Gebrehiwot, State Minister for Strategic Affairs at the Ministry of Education, and Chen Hai, the Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia.
Under the framework of this newly established partnership, the initiative will move beyond standard language instruction to foster comprehensive bilateral growth. The agreement specifically targets the expansion of tourism, technology transfer, academic collaboration, and people-to-people relations between the two nations.
According to State Minister Professor Kindeya Gebrehiwot, the program is designed to facilitate robust knowledge sharing in cutting-edge fields. It is expected to heavily benefit Ethiopia’s emerging tech sectors, with a particular focus on accelerating advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Furthermore, the Chinese government will back the educational initiative by offering specialized scholarship opportunities for Ethiopian students. These scholarships aim to provide advanced training in high-tech fields where China currently maintains significant global expertise.
The implementation of the curriculum is expected to commence over the current academic cycle, marking a significant milestone in Sino-Ethiopian diplomatic and educational ties. Both nations view this integration as a critical step toward building a highly skilled, globally competitive Ethiopian workforce.
