Addis Ababa Hosts Key Economic Diplomacy and Export Forum

Addis Ababa recently hosted a high-level Economic Diplomacy and Export Forum aimed at boosting international trade, drawing key policymakers, diplomats, and business leaders. Jointly organized by the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations (ECCSA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the event served as a collaborative platform to address trade bottlenecks and enhance Ethiopia’s global market presence.

The forum focused on leveraging economic diplomacy to expand national exports, attract high-quality foreign direct investment, promote tourism, and facilitate technology transfer. Participants emphasized that maximizing these areas is essential for supporting Ethiopia’s ongoing macroeconomic transitions. Discussions also highlighted how national reforms in finance, taxation, logistics, and investment frameworks are designed to position the country as a leading manufacturing and trade hub in Africa.

ECCSA President Sebsibe Abafira emphasized that centering economic diplomacy within foreign policy is crucial to achieving these national goals. He noted that the primary objective of the forum was to bridge public and private sector efforts, transforming current export challenges into strategic growth opportunities. According to Abafira, identifying new international markets and systematically dismantling trade barriers through bilateral consultations remain top priorities for stakeholders.

To ensure long-term competitiveness, the assembly underscored the need for value-added investments that generate employment, enhance productivity, and boost foreign exchange reserves. Furthermore, the role of Ethiopian embassies abroad was highlighted as a critical asset. Diplomatic missions were urged to gather reliable market intelligence and establish sustainable partnerships with foreign chambers of commerce and financial institutions.

The conference concluded with a joint commitment from both government and private sector representatives to implement the practical solutions discussed. Stakeholders agreed that effectively promoting Ethiopia’s economic reforms and its growing role within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework will be vital to securing the country’s future economic resilience.
