The reliable government sources in India and Pakistan confirmed that on the initiative of Pakistan, India agreed to cessation of firing and military actions with immediate effect from 5 pm India time on 10 May 2025. This move was seen as a positive step towards establishment of peace and security in the region after heavy losses suffered by Pakistan.
As per the sources, Pakistan suffered heavy losses to its key air bases and military infrastructure due to precise targeting by India on night of 9-10 May 2025. This has perceptibly crumpled the military capabilities of Pakistan significantly.
USA President Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were in touch with the leadership of both countries and finally under their influence, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) called upon his Indian counterpart and requested for cessation of all forms of military actions which was accepted by the Indian government. It was agreed that the situation will be reviewed at the level of DGMOs on 12 May 25.

While confirming this, the Indian Foreign Minister re-emphasized Indian’s firm stand of ‘Zero Tolerance against Terrorism’ through his tweet “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action. India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so”
Pakistan’s deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister has also announced cessation of military action through his tweet “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”
It is worthwhile to mention that Pakistan has to take 5 bailouts from International Monetary Fund (IMF) in last 4 years. Yesterday the IMF announced it’s latest package of US $ 1 Billion to Pakistan. Reliable sources indicate that one of the condition for IMF bailout despite India’s opposition was an undertaking from Pakistan that the money will be used for bringing macroeconomic stability and not diverted for military or other purposes. This has acted as an incentive for Pakistan to compromise; whereas for the USA it gives a chance to continue it’s influence on Pakistan.
However, by evening, 3 hours after reaching the ceasefire, it was violated by the Pakistani forces which went for unprovoked firing and use of mortar shells across the international border. This indicates that the political leadership has limited or no control on the military leadership, which has long history of directly and indirectly ruling Pakistan. This may be one way of the Pakistani Militarily to show their importance and seek a large share out of the IMF bailout package. We fear, India will have no option but to go for offensive against Pakistan which would result in heavy losses.
We will continue to monitor the situation and keep the viewers / readers updated on the emerging situation in South Asia.
