Religious Institutions in Gofa Condemn Murder of Pregnant Mother; Demand Swift Justice

Religious institutions and the community in Melo Koza Woreda, Gofa Zone, are expressing deep outrage following the brutal murder of a pregnant woman. The incident, which occurred on March 7, 2026, has left residents of Laha town in shock. The victim, identified as Mrs. Zehara Yimam, was six months pregnant at the time of her death. Reports indicate that the primary suspect in this violent act is her own husband.

In a joint statement, the Melo Koza Woreda Islamic Affairs Council and the Laha Nur Mosque condemned the killing in the strongest terms. They described the act as “barbaric” and a clear sign of moral decay within society. The religious leaders emphasized that such a crime contradicts all religious teachings and cultural values, asserting that violence of this nature has no place in a civilized community.

The statement further highlighted the sanctity of life, noting that “cruelty has no religion” and that killing an innocent soul is equivalent to an assault on all of humanity. The religious institutions have formally called upon the government and the justice system to apprehend the suspect immediately. They are advocating for the maximum legal penalty to serve as a deterrent against future acts of domestic violence.

Local residents have rallied behind the family of the victim, raising their voices under the banner “Justice for Zehara.” The atmosphere in the region remains heavy with grief, as the community struggles to process the loss of a mother and her unborn child. Many are calling for increased protection for women and more robust interventions in cases of domestic disputes before they escalate into tragedy.

Law enforcement agencies in the Gofa Zone have confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances of the murder has officially commenced. While authorities are working to ensure the suspect is brought to face the court, they have urged the public to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course. Officials stated that they are committed to a transparent investigation to ensure full accountability.

Finally, religious leaders have issued a broader call to the community to stand together against violence targeting women and children. They urged citizens to expose domestic abuse and cooperate with security forces to prevent such tragedies. Residents now wait for the conclusion of the investigation, hoping that a swift and fair trial will bring a sense of closure to the grieving community.
