MultiChoice Secures Comprehensive Broadcast Rights for Expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup

In a move that significantly broadens the reach of international football across the continent, MultiChoice Group has confirmed that its sports subsidiary, SuperSport, will broadcast all 104 matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ live.

The announcement marks a strategic shift in the broadcaster’s delivery model. For the first time, the tournament will be accessible across the full spectrum of service tiers—from the entry-level DStv Access to the top-tier DStv Premium—covering English and Portuguese-speaking markets in sub-Saharan Africa.

A Tournament of “Firsts”

The 2026 edition, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, represents the most significant expansion in FIFA’s history. The tournament has grown from 32 to 48 participating nations, resulting in a record 104 matches. This expansion also makes it the longest-running World Cup to date, scheduled to kick off in Mexico City on June 11 and conclude in New Jersey on July 19.

From a regional perspective, the stakes are notably higher for African football. Due to the expanded format, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is sending its largest-ever contingent of 10 nations to the global stage. The qualified teams representing the continent include Ghana, South Africa, Senegal, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Accessibility and Market Strategy

The decision to include the entire tournament in the DStv Access package suggests a focus on mass-market penetration. By lowering the financial barrier to entry, MultiChoice—now a subsidiary of the CANAL+ Company—aims to capture a broader viewership during a period of high regional interest.

To support the live coverage, the broadcaster plans to roll out specialized magazine shows and masterclasses featuring experts from across the globe. Additionally, the broadcast will feature special segments tailored to unique African cultures and local languages.
