In the upcoming fiscal year, Ethiopia’s defence budget is anticipated to exceed 50 billion birr

Out of the 801.65 billion Birr federal government budget for the upcoming fiscal year, 50 billion Birr have been allocated to the Ministry of Defence, and 20 billion Birr have been set aside for the reconstruction of the institutions and services destroyed in the battle in northern Ethiopia.

The majority of the 122 billion birr additional budget that was proposed and authorised in the early months of the fiscal year to compensate the additional expenses brought on by the war in northern Ethiopia went to the Ministry of Defence.

The Pretoria Peace Agreement put an end to the Northern War, and for the 2016 fiscal year, the Ministry of Defence will get 50 billion birr.

The proposal budget for the 2016 fiscal year includes 20 billion Birr, according to the document, which has been set aside for reconstructing the infrastructure that was destroyed during the war in northern Ethiopia. The regions have been given 214 billion birr over a two-year period for the 2016 budget year due to the war in the north.
The Tigray region has been awarded 12.5 billion Birr for the 2016 fiscal year, in addition to the budget support listed above from the federal government.

The Southern, Oromia, and Amhara ethnic groups and peoples areas continue to receive the largest amounts of the budget allotted for regional subsidies; they were granted, respectively, 71.9, 45.1, and 26.9 billion Birr.

The draught budget also allocates funds to the Somali Region, Southwest Ethiopia People’s Region, and Sidama Region, totaling 20.8 billion Birr, 6.4 billion Birr, and 8.5 billion Birr, respectively. The Afar region will receive 6.3 billion Birr, the Benshangul region 3.8 billion, the Gambella people’s region 2.7 billion, the Hareri people’s region 1.5 billion, Addis Abeba city 5.2 billion, and the city of Dre Dawa 1.8 billion.
