Former Addis Ababa Mayor Ambassador Ali Abdo has passed away last night while receiving medical treatment for an illness, according to the Addis Ababa Islamic Affairs Higher Council. His passing marks the end of a life deeply involved in Ethiopia’s political and diplomatic history.
The council confirmed that his funeral service is scheduled to take place today following the Friday Juma prayers. The burial will be held at the Daletti Muslim Cemetery, with family members, relatives, friends, and high-ranking government officials expected to be in attendance to pay their final respects.

Ambassador Ali served as the 27th mayor of Addis Ababa, leading the capital city for five years from 1997 to 2003 (1990 to 1995 in the Ethiopian calendar). His administration during these years formed a significant part of his extensive career in public service and national governance.
Born in Werejih community, Ambassador Ali was raised by his father, Ato Ali Suleiman, and his mother, Woizero Atsede Woldemariam, in the town of Dera, Arsi. He graduated from Addis Ababa University and began his active political journey in the 1970s by joining the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP).
Beyond his public and political life, Ambassador Ali was a family man. He is survived by his four children, consisting of three daughters and one son. Government representatives and community members have begun expressing their condolences to the bereaved family during this time of mourning.
