Ethiopia’s Walias Secure Dominant 3-0 Victory Over São Tomé and Príncipe

The Ethiopian National Team, popularly known as the Walias, launched their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a commanding performance. In the first leg of the preliminary round, Ethiopia secured a definitive 3-0 victory against São Tomé and Príncipe. This result provides a significant advantage for the team as they look to progress through the continental qualifiers.
The match took place on Friday evening at the El Abdi Stadium in Morocco. From the opening whistle, the Walias demonstrated a structured approach, maintaining possession and putting consistent pressure on the opposition’s defensive line. The early tactical discipline allowed Ethiopia to dictate the tempo of the game and create multiple scoring opportunities in the final third.

Forward Abel Yalew was the standout performer of the night, opening the scoring to give Ethiopia an early lead. His ability to find space within the box proved difficult for the São Tomé and Príncipe defenders to contain. This initial goal settled the team’s nerves and allowed them to execute their game plan with increased confidence throughout the first half.
Building on the momentum, Abel Yalew struck again to double the lead, capitalizing on a well-orchestrated team move. His second goal of the match underscored the clinical nature of the Ethiopian attack. By securing a brace, Yalew not only solidified the Walias’ lead but also highlighted the offensive depth currently present within the national squad.
The victory was further sealed by midfielder Kenean Markneh, who added a third goal to ensure a comfortable margin. Markneh’s contribution from the midfield provided the necessary link between defense and attack, culminating in a strike that left the opposition with little room for a comeback. The 3-0 scoreline reflects a balanced performance across all sectors of the pitch.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again next Tuesday for the return leg, which will be hosted at the Dire Dawa Stadium in Ethiopia. With a three-goal cushion and the advantage of playing in front of a home crowd, the Walias are well-positioned to advance. Fans are expected to turn out in large numbers to support the team’s bid for the 2027 tournament.
