Ethiopian Court Sentences Two Men to 10 Years for Gang Rape in Tigray Region

The High Court of the South Eastern Zone in Ethiopia’s Tigray region has delivered a rigorous sentencing against two individuals found guilty of a violent sexual assault. On March 27, 2026, the court sentenced the perpetrators to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for the gang rape of a woman in Hintalo Wereda, specifically in the Hiwane Kebele area. The ruling follows a lengthy judicial process aimed at addressing gender-based violence and upholding the rule of law within the local jurisdiction.

The criminal incident occurred on the night of July 18, 2025, as the victim was returning home from work. According to court records and reports from the Zonal Communications Bureau, the attackers intercepted her and used a sharp weapon to threaten her life. Under the duress of physical harm, she was abducted and subjected to a group sexual assault, an act that has drawn significant condemnation from the local community and human rights advocates within Ethiopia.

Although the suspects were not apprehended immediately following the commission of the crime, local law enforcement maintained an extensive investigation. The complexity of the case meant that the investigative phase required several months to gather sufficient evidence. Ultimately, the prosecution presented a combination of eyewitness testimonies and forensic documentation that definitively linked the two individuals to the assault, leading to their conviction by the regional judiciary.

The victim expressed a sense of relief regarding the 10-year sentences handed down to the primary attackers, noting that the court’s recognition of the crime is a step toward justice. However, she also voiced significant dissatisfaction regarding a third individual alleged to have coordinated the attack. This individual was acquitted and released by the court due to a lack of sufficient evidence, a decision the victim has formally contested, requesting a judicial review of that specific ruling.

This sentencing serves as a critical marker for the legal system in Ethiopia as it continues to process cases involving violence against women and children. The Zonal Communications Bureau emphasized that such rulings are essential for maintaining public order and deterring similar criminal acts in the future. As the legal proceedings for the alleged coordinator remain a point of contention, the case highlights the ongoing challenges of achieving comprehensive legal accountability in complex criminal investigations.
