A talented cohort of young Ethiopian innovators has officially presented their cutting-edge inventions following the completion of an intensive summer robotics training program. Organized jointly by the Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MInT) and the Ethio-Robotics Center, the showcase serves as a crucial milestone in selecting the team that will represent Ethiopia at the prestigious International STEM Robotics Competition, scheduled for April 2027 in St. Louis, Missouri.
State Minister of Innovation and Technology, Dr. Baysa Bedada, emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding technological infrastructure, noting that improved access is enabling local youth to engage with advanced digital tools. Addressing the participants, Dr. Baysa urged the upcoming generation to translate theoretical knowledge into practical applications, emphasizing that local problem-solving innovations are essential to securing the nation’s broader digital sovereignty and long-term economic resilience.
Highlighting the educational framework behind the initiative, Senakrem Mekonnen, Managing Director of the Ethio-Robotics Center, outlined the institution’s ongoing focus on cultivating real-world engineering skills. He reaffirmed that the center will continue to expand hands-on training programs designed to develop programmers, coders, and engineers, ensuring young participants are well-equipped to tackle complex societal challenges through modern technological solutions.
The initiative comes amid a broader push across East Africa to boost science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to meet the demands of a rapidly growing global digital economy. International competitions like the St. Louis event offer critical exposure for emerging talent from developing nations, fostering cross-cultural collaboration while highlighting regional technological advancements on a global platform.
As final selections approach, candidates will undergo further specialized technical preparation to refine their designs and autonomous programming before traveling to the United States. Representatives from both MInT and the Ethio-Robotics Center expressed confidence that Ethiopia’s delegation will showcase competitive excellence, inspiring increased investment and youth participation in domestic technology sectors moving forward.
