Ethiopian Airlines has officially signed a major agreement with the Boeing Company to acquire 10 new commercial freighters, significantly boosting its air cargo fleet and global logistics footprint. The strategic purchase includes eight next-generation Boeing 777-8 Freighters alongside two Boeing 777 Freighters. The agreement was formally signed by Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew and Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing Brad McMullen, marking another milestone in the decades-long partnership between the two aviation leaders.
The primary objective of this fleet expansion is to enhance Ethiopian Airlines Cargo and Logistics Services’ global capacity to meet rising international trade demands. The flagship Boeing 777-8F model boasts a maximum payload capacity of up to 118 tonnes and offers a 30% improvement in fuel efficiency and emissions reduction compared to older generation aircraft. By integrating these ultra-long-range freighters, the carrier aims to streamline transcontinental cargo operations connecting Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas with greater speed, reliability, and cost efficiency.
With this contract, Ethiopian Airlines officially becomes the first African carrier to order the advanced Boeing 777-8 Freighter. Industry analysts highlight that securing these state-of-the-art aircraft positions Africa’s largest airline to capitalize on expanding trade corridors, particularly under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.
