Ethiopia Acquires Advanced Russian Su-35 Jets to Bolster Air Defense

Ethiopia has officially received its first batch of twelve advanced Su-35 fighter jets from Russia, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s military modernization. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the acquisition, highlighting that the delivery arrived one year ahead of schedule as part of a broader strategic defense agreement between Addis Ababa and Moscow.

The newly acquired aircraft are classified as 4++ generation fighters, placing them among the most capable combat jets currently operating outside of fifth-generation stealth technology. In addition to the twelve Su-35 fighters, the comprehensive defense package includes plans for Ethiopia to receive four S-400 surface-to-air missile defense system batteries. Defense analysts note that these acquisitions will dramatically upgrade the operational range, radar tracking capabilities, and overall strike power of the Ethiopian Air Force.

Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that the new hardware is defensive in nature and aimed at ensuring long-term national security and regional stability. “The comprehensive efforts we are making to sustainably ensure our country’s peace and security have reached a new chapter today,” the Prime Minister stated. He added that the enhanced military readiness equips the armed forces with the necessary deterrence to preemptively discourage potential security threats.

With this procurement, Ethiopia becomes the first nation in Sub-Saharan Africa to operate the Su-35 fighter jet, signaling a notable shift in the regional military balance. The acquisition underscores strengthening bilateral ties between Ethiopia and Russia, with Prime Minister Abiy extending special gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for expediting the delivery timeline despite ongoing geopolitical complexities and global supply chain pressures.

While regional observers acknowledge the sovereign right of Ethiopia to upgrade its national defense capabilities, international security experts maintain mixed perspectives on the acquisition. Some analysts caution that the introduction of high-end military hardware could escalate regional arms races in the volatile Horn of Africa. Conversely, proponents argue that a well-equipped Ethiopian military serves as a vital anchor for regional peacekeeping, counter-terrorism operations, and collective security across East Africa.
