Ethio Telecom has officially entered into a strategic partnership agreement with the global telecommunications giant Ericsson to significantly expand and modernize its network infrastructure. The signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of the World Mobile Congress (MWC) currently being held in Barcelona, Spain. This collaboration is designed to accelerate Ethiopia’s digital transformation by integrating advanced technologies into the national grid, ensuring that the country remains competitive in an increasingly connected global economy.
The scope of the agreement is extensive, focusing on the expansion and upgrading of 1,500 mobile sites across various regions. By implementing Ericsson’s latest technological solutions, Ethio Telecom aims to enhance network quality, boost data capacity, and improve overall service reliability. This technical overhaul is expected to provide a seamless experience for millions of subscribers, addressing previous bottlenecks in connectivity and preparing the infrastructure for future technological shifts.
A primary objective of this partnership is the widening of high-speed internet accessibility throughout the country. Specifically, the project will extend 4G LTE services to 276 additional cities, ensuring that urban centers have the bandwidth required for modern business and education. Furthermore, the agreement includes a dedicated focus on inclusivity, with plans to deploy specialized mobile technology services to 75 rural areas. This move is intended to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural populations, providing remote communities with essential access to information and communication tools.
Beyond basic connectivity, the modernization of the network serves as a foundational pillar for Ethiopia’s burgeoning digital ecosystem. The enhanced infrastructure will provide the necessary technical support for national platforms such as the mobile money service, telebirr, and other digital marketplaces like Zemen Gebeya and Zenexus.
