A total of 1,971 Ethiopian nationals detained in Saudi Arabia have been granted royal clemency following successful diplomatic negotiations between the two nations, according to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ethiopian government has officially commenced repatriation procedures to bring the pardoned citizens back home.
The breakthrough comes as a result of sustained diplomatic engagements managed by the Ethiopian Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate General in Jeddah. These discussions with Saudi authorities specifically targeted improving the conditions of detained citizens, securing consular support, and advocating for humanitarian considerations.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that these ongoing bilateral communications are part of a broader effort to safeguard the rights of its diaspora. The amnesty marks a significant milestone in the current round of talks, providing relief to thousands of affected families.
Looking forward, the Ministry indicated that operations will not stop with this group. Ethiopian diplomats plan to continue working closely with Saudi Arabian officials to address the remaining cases of undocumented or detained citizens and to ensure their legal protections are maintained.
Repatriation schedules and logistical frameworks are currently being finalized by the ministry to facilitate a smooth return. Both governments have expressed a mutual commitment to resolving ongoing migration and legal issues through established diplomatic channels.
