China Surpasses U.S. to Become Third-Largest Importer of Ethiopian Coffee

China has officially overtaken the United States to become the third-largest buyer of Ethiopian coffee, driven by surging demand and strengthening bilateral trade ties. According to the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, the shift highlights a major realignment in the global coffee market. Authorities project that China’s rapidly growing appetite for the commodity could position it as the top destination for Ethiopian coffee within the next two years.

During the recently concluded fiscal year, Ethiopia exported 47,836 tons of coffee to China, generating $347 million in revenue. This marks a substantial increase from the previous year, which saw 34,284 tons exported for $219 million. While Saudi Arabia and Germany currently maintain their positions as the top two export destinations, China’s aggressive growth trajectory is rapidly closing the gap.

Market analysts attribute this export boom to the naturally organic quality of Ethiopian coffee, alongside drastically improved shipping and logistical services. Furthermore, deepening diplomatic and commercial relations between Addis Ababa and Beijing have facilitated smoother trade pathways. This cooperation has allowed Ethiopian exporters to navigate international supply chains more efficiently to meet Chinese demand.

To sustain this momentum, the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority is actively targeting younger demographics in China through tailored promotional campaigns. Officials note that shifting lifestyle trends among China’s urban youth have created a burgeoning cafe culture, presenting an unprecedented market opportunity. By aligning marketing strategies with these consumer preferences, Ethiopia aims to secure a permanent stronghold in the competitive Asian market.
