Ethiopian Students Win Second Prize at Global Huawei ICT Competition in China



An Ethiopian university team has secured the second prize at the prestigious Global Huawei ICT Competition 2025–2026, which concluded on June 5, 2026, in Shenzhen, China.

The talented students from Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU) achieved the podium finish by showcasing outstanding innovation, technical excellence, and creativity on a global stage.

​Competing in the highly competitive Innovation Track, the Ethiopian team captivated judges with their groundbreaking project titled “AI-Powered Mammography Analysis System for Breast Cancer Detection.” The solution leverages artificial intelligence to assist medical professionals in the early detection of breast cancer through advanced mammography image analysis, proving how cutting-edge technology can directly solve critical healthcare challenges.

​The global finals brought together top-tier students from all over the world, who competed across three specialized categories: the Innovation Track, the Practice Track, and the Programming Competition.

Ethiopia’s strong performance in the innovation category highlights the growing competitive edge and readiness of the nation’s tech talent on an international level.

​The AI-driven project addresses a vital global health concern by streamlining diagnostic accuracy, potentially saving lives through early intervention. Representatives at the event praised the AASTU students for their ability to merge complex artificial intelligence algorithms with real-world medical needs seamlessly.


​This remarkable achievement not only brings immense pride to Addis Ababa Science and Technology University but also underscores Ethiopia’s rising influence in the global Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector.
