Ethiopian Athletics Community Mourns as Marathon Star Yebrgual Melese Passes Away at 36



The Ethiopian athletics community is in mourning following the sudden passing of elite long-distance runner Yebrgual Melese, who died Tuesday morning after collapsing during a training session. According to reports from the Addis Media Network (AMN), Melese experienced a sudden medical emergency while training. Although she was rushed to a nearby hospital immediately, medical professionals were unable to save her. She was 36 years old.


​At the time of her passing, Melese was in peak physical condition and was actively preparing for her next major competition. She was considered a top favorite to win the upcoming Ottawa Marathon in Canada, which is scheduled to take place in just two weeks. Her sudden departure has shocked the distance-running world, where she was highly respected for her professionalism and endurance.

​Yebrgual Melese Arage was a formidable force on the international road racing circuit, known for her consistency and tactical patience. Her career highlights include prestigious victories at the Shanghai, Prague, Houston, and Seoul International Marathons. One of her most significant achievements came in 2018 at the Dubai Marathon, where she clocked a lifetime personal best of 2:19:36, solidifying her status as one of the elite sub-2:20 female marathoners in history.


​Her success extended beyond the full marathon. Melese earned a silver medal at the 2015 Chicago Marathon, one of the World Marathon Majors, and a bronze medal in the half marathon at the 2015 All-Africa Games. She was also a three-time champion on the European half-marathon circuit, with multiple wins in Paris and Lisbon. Her running style—marked by a steady rhythm followed by a powerful surge in the final 10 kilometers—made her a constant threat in the lead pack.


​The Ethiopian sports world has been quick to pay tribute to her legacy. AMN expressed deep sorrow over the loss of such a “successful and inspiring athlete,” extending heartfelt condolences to her husband, her two children, and her many fans across the globe. Her death leaves a significant void in the world of distance running, where she was admired not only for her speed but for her dedication to the sport and her country.
