Death Penalty Handed Down for Rape and Murder in Northern Ethiopia

A High Court in the Eastern Zone of Tigray, Ethiopia, has sentenced a man to death following the brutal rape and murder of a 25-year-old university employee in Adigrat. The ruling concludes a complex eight-month legal process and investigation into a case that has drawn significant attention across the region since early 2025.

The incident occurred in February 2025 when the perpetrator gained access to the victim’s residence. According to investigators, the individual posed as a peaceful acquaintance to enter the home. Once inside, he locked the door and proceeded to commit a violent sexual assault against the young woman.

Following the assault, the victim reportedly told her attacker that the legal system would eventually hold him accountable for his actions. In a violent response to this statement, the assailant stabbed the victim 12 times with a sharp object and strangled her with a rope, ensuring she could not seek immediate help or testify against him.

The investigation faced initial hurdles because the crimes were committed in private without any direct witnesses. However, the case saw a major breakthrough when a member of the public overheard the suspect confessing to a killing. This tip-off proved vital, as it allowed authorities to track the suspect’s movements toward the border.

The perpetrator was eventually apprehended by police in the Afar region while attempting to flee Ethiopia. After being returned to Tigray to face trial, he was charged with aggravated rape, robbery, and first-degree murder. The prosecution presented forensic evidence and witness testimony regarding his post-crime conduct to secure a conviction.

In its final verdict, the Eastern Zone High Court emphasized the cruelty of the crimes and sentenced the man to death. The Tigray Regional Police cited the case as a successful example of community-led reporting, noting that the victim’s belief in the strength of the law was ultimately upheld by the court’s decision.
