Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister DemekeMekonnen visited China at the invitation of State Councillor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang.

His Excellency Demeke met with Luo Zhaohui, Director of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), on May 25, 2023 in Beijing as part of his four-day official visit. He also attended the Beijing Foreign Studies University’s call for collaboration between Ethiopian and Chinese higher education institutions as well as the development of Amharic textbooks for Chinese students.

Demeke believes that information exchange with Chinese research institutions is essential for Ethiopian higher education institutions.He said that the partnership on the Amharic language between Beijing University of Foreign Studies and Addis Ababa University will assist to fortify people-to-people ties even further.The university’s vice president, Jia Wenjian, added that promoting Ethiopia’s culture and history in China requires the adoption of the Amharic language.

He emphasised the significance of fostering the strong economic ties that exist between Ethiopia and China. More than 300 investors from the manufacturing, agricultural, mining, energy, pharmaceutical, and other sectors attended the investment event.

During his visit, Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen spoke with a number of enterprises in China, one of which is Huawei Technologies. Mr. Liming, Huawei Ethiopia’s public relations director, spoke about Huawei’s global impact and, in particular, what the company is doing to accelerate ICT operations in Ethiopia. The director elaborates on the company’s contribution to supporting Ethiopian education.
His Excellency stated that the company should broaden and strengthen its support in the ICT industry. He also encourages Huawei to continue its contributions to Ethiopian nations.
