Uganda Airlines: Ethiopian Aviation Veteran Girma Wake Appointed as Acting CEO to Lead Turnaround

​In a major move to overhaul the management of the national carrier, President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Girma Wake, the legendary former CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, to take over the leadership of Uganda Airlines.

​The decision, communicated via an official presidential directive dated February 13, 2026, aims to address persistent “management weaknesses” that have hindered the airline’s growth and stability.

Key Leadership Changes

​According to the directive addressed to the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, the following changes are effective immediately:

  • Immediate Exit: The current CEO, Ms. Jenifer Bamuturaki, has been directed to step aside immediately and hand over all responsibilities to the Board and the incoming leadership.
  • New Leadership: Mr. Girma Wake has been appointed as a Consultant/Advisor and will serve as the Acting CEO.
  • Timeline: Mr. Wake is expected to lead the airline until July 2026, by which time a substantive new CEO is expected to be appointed.
  • Mandate: His primary focus will be rectifying management deficiencies and working hand-in-hand with the Board to streamline operations.

Who is Girma Wake?

​Widely regarded as the “Father of African Aviation,” Girma Wake brings over 50 years of industry experience to Uganda Airlines. His track record is unparalleled in the region:

  1. Ethiopian Airlines Success: He is credited with transforming Ethiopian Airlines into a global powerhouse during his tenure as CEO (2004–2011).
  2. Regional Impact: He previously served as the Board Chairman of RwandAir, playing a pivotal role in the Rwandan carrier’s modernization and expansion.
  3. Global Authority: He has held various high-level advisory roles, including serving as the Board Chairman of Ethiopian Airlines Group in recent years.

Strategic Significance

​Since its revival in 2019, Uganda Airlines has faced a series of challenges, including high-level administrative friction, audit queries, and financial losses. By bringing in a veteran of Mr. Wake’s caliber, President Museveni is signaling a shift toward meritocracy and professional excellence.

​Industry analysts view this appointment as a “rescue mission.” Mr. Wake’s expertise is expected to instill international best practices, improve operational efficiency, and prepare the airline for a more competitive future in the African and international skies.
