U.S. Imposes Visa Restrictions on TPLF Officials Amid Rising Tensions in Ethiopia

The United States government has announced targeted visa restrictions against members of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) accused of undermining peace in northern Ethiopia. The policy targets hardline officials and their immediate families. This action follows recent military clashes that threaten to disrupt the fragile stability established after years of devastating civil conflict.

According to a State Department announcement, the decision responds to escalating friction between TPLF hardliners and the Ethiopian federal government. Earlier this year, direct engagements between the Tigray Security Forces (TSF) and the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) sparked widespread concern. The clashes marked the first significant military confrontation between the two sides since the 2022 peace agreement.

The renewed instability risks reigniting a conflict that previously claimed an estimated 600,000 lives and left millions facing severe food insecurity. Reports indicate that hundreds of thousands of civilians in northern Ethiopia have already fled their homes due to fears of a full-scale return to war. Humanitarian organizations warn that further displacement could worsen the region’s existing humanitarian crisis.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio implemented the restrictions under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. The policy specifically penalizes individuals deemed responsible for, or complicit in, obstructing a peaceful resolution to the crisis in the Tigray region. U.S. officials emphasized their intention to use available diplomatic tools to promote accountability among those threatening regional stability.

The Ethiopian government and TPLF leadership have faced continuous international pressure to maintain the tenets of the 2022 permanent cessation of hostilities. While Washington reiterated its support for the broader Ethiopian population’s desire for peace, regional analysts suggest the impact of these unilateral sanctions on the ground dynamics remains to be seen.
