The GERD Negotiations’ Fourth Round gets underway in Addis

The fourth round of trilateral talks between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan began today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Joint Statement issued on July 13, 2023 by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia and President Abdel Fatah el Sisi of Egypt is the basis for these discussions. The two presidents pledged in that statement to expedite negotiations in order to finish the rules and specifications that will control the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam’s (GERD) yearly operation and initial filling.

Before the fourth session, a one-day conference of technical experts from the three countries set the stage for the ministerial discussions.

The goal of the negotiations is to increase the progress made in previous sessions by concentrating on reaching convergence by the summit scheduled for December 19, 2023.

The 2015 Declaration of Principles (DoP) of the GERD Project continues to govern Ethiopia. More accurately, the country will continue to advocate for solutions based on the notion of using the waters of the Nile River in a fair and reasonable manner.
