The House of People’s Representatives appointed Ms. Melatework as the National Election Board’s chairman during its ninth regular meeting today.
The proposed appointment was approved by the council as Resolution No. 2/2024 with a majority vote in favour and one abstention.
The parliament chose a new speaker to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of former judge and opposition leader Birtukan Mideksa in June of last year, citing health issues.
The new chairwoman graduated in law from Addis Ababa University 34 years ago, and he is the founder of New Generation University and has worked in various departments of the university.
She has worked as a legal and policy consultant for the past four years.
She received a master’s degree in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School in the United States and a master’s degree in peace and security from the Institute of Peace and Security Studies – IPSS in Addis Ababa.
The recently appointed chairwoman received her legal degree from Addis Ababa University thirty-four years ago. She founded New Generation University and held positions in several academic divisions.
For the past four years, she has worked as a legal and policy consultant.
She graduated with master’s degrees in public administration from Harvard Kennedy School in the US and peace and security from the Institute of Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) in Addis Ababa.
Her main duties to her country will be to register political parties and plan a legitimate, well-run election for the upcoming election which will be held after years.
