The 2nd round of talks between the government and the Oromo Liberation Army ended in failure.

The talks between the Ethiopian government and the Oromo Liberation Army in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, were proclaimed over by the government.

This announcement was made by Ambassador Redwan Hussain, the national security advisor to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the government’s negotiator.

What he has on his official Twitter account is as follows:

“The GoE regrets this unfortunate turn of events. The FDRE Government will like to thank all the facilitators and observers who have devoted their time, energy and resource in pursuit of peace. Our thaks also goes to the Government of Tanzania for hosting the two round of talks.”

The first round of multi-day negotiations between the government and insurgents ended in failure in April of last year on the Tanzanian holiday island of Zanzibar.

In Tanzania’s capital city of Dar es Salaam, the second round of negotiations has been going on for around two weeks. Unlike in the first round of negotiations, commanders of the Oromo Liberation Army participated, as did prominent military and political representatives from the Ethiopian government.

The national security advisor to the prime minister, Ambassador Redwan Hussain, neglected to address the issues that prevented the parties from reaching an agreement.

He went on to explain that, as it has done in the past, the Ethiopian government has tried to create a favourable environment so that the peace agreement can be concluded in a way that respects the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and constitution.

The Ethiopian government has said that negotiations with the armed group have finished without a deal, although the Oromo Liberation Army has not issued a statement.
