Federal Government Establishes Six-Month Interim Administration in Tigray Region

A new federal interim administration has been established to govern the Tigray region for the next six months, aiming to stabilize local governance and accelerate regional recovery.

The newly announced structure follows ongoing political developments and is designed to bridge administrative gaps while fostering institutional stability. According to federal authorities, the caretaker framework will focus heavily on restoring essential civil services, maintaining public order, and facilitating humanitarian access across the region.

To execute its mandate effectively, the administration has appointed four key executive leaders to oversee critical sectors. Mr. Assefa Abreha has been assigned to lead administration and public services, while Dr. Teodros Aregai will spearhead the economy and reconstruction portfolio. These appointments are intended to address immediate humanitarian needs and kickstart damaged infrastructure projects in urban and rural areas.

In the security sector, Brigadier General Gebreegziabher Beyene has been designated as the head of peace and security, tasked with coordinating regional stability alongside federal forces. Additionally, Mr. Redae Halefom will manage political affairs and public organization, working to engage local stakeholders and community leaders in the reconstruction process.

Rounding out the leadership announcements, Dr. Shishay Amare has been appointed as the mayor of Mekelle to manage municipal operations and daily urban governance. While international partners have expressed cautious optimism regarding the administrative transition, local civil society groups emphasize that inclusive dialogue and transparency will be vital for the six-month mandate to achieve lasting peace.
