Ethiopia’s National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) has announced a significant narcotics seizure at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, marking another successful operation in the country’s crackdown on transit crimes. Security officials intercepted 4.48 kilograms of cocaine that was being smuggled through the capital’s main aviation hub. The operation highlights the increasing vigilance of Ethiopian authorities in combating international drug trafficking through East Africa’s busiest transit point.
According to the official statement released by NISS, the illicit substance was discovered during a routine security screening of transit passengers. The suspect involved in the smuggling attempt was traveling from Lagos, Nigeria, with a final intended destination of India. The individual had utilized Ethiopia as a strategic stopover point, a common tactic used by international traffickers to mask the original source of their travel and evade direct-route scrutiny.
The smuggling method was notably sophisticated, as the traffickers had attempted to conceal the narcotics within a shipment of dried fish.
