Ethiopia’s National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) has announced a significant narcotics seizure at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, marking another successful operation in the country’s crackdown on transit crimes. Security officials intercepted 4.48 kilograms of cocaine that was being smuggled through the capital’s main aviation hub. The operation highlights the increasing vigilance of Ethiopian authorities in combating international drug trafficking through East Africa’s busiest transit point.

According to the official statement released by NISS, the illicit substance was discovered during a routine security screening of transit passengers. The suspect involved in the smuggling attempt was traveling from Lagos, Nigeria, with a final intended destination of India. The individual had utilized Ethiopia as a strategic stopover point, a common tactic used by international traffickers to mask the original source of their travel and evade direct-route scrutiny.
The smuggling method was notably sophisticated, as the traffickers had attempted to conceal the narcotics within a shipment of dried fish. By using organic material with a strong scent, smugglers often hope to distract canine units and mask the chemical profile of the drugs from human inspectors. However, the vigilance of the Aviation Security personnel, combined with the use of advanced screening technology, led to the discovery of the hidden compartment.
Upon detailed inspection, security officers recovered a total of 172 individual pellets of cocaine. The combined weight of the seized items totaled 4.48 kilograms, representing a high street value. The NISS emphasized that the successful interception was the result of a coordinated effort between various intelligence and security stakeholders operating within Ethiopia, utilizing modern X-ray machinery to identify inconsistencies in the passenger’s luggage.
Following the discovery, the suspect was immediately taken into custody. The National Intelligence and Security Service confirmed that both the individual and the confiscated evidence have been handed over to the Ethiopian Federal Police for further investigation. Criminal forensic teams are now expected to conduct a deeper analysis to determine if the suspect is linked to a larger organized crime syndicate operating across continents.
This seizure underscores Ethiopia’s strategic importance in the global fight against drug trafficking. As a major gateway connecting Africa to Asia and Europe, Bole International Airport remains a focal point for security agencies. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to tightening surveillance and utilizing cutting-edge technology to ensure that the nation’s aviation infrastructure is not exploited for the movement of illegal contraband.
