Ethiopian cow’s milk is not competitive enough for the global market

The Animal Development Institute claims that the quality of Ethiopian cow’s milk prevents it from competing on the international market and that it has not been able to sufficiently support the nation’s economy. According to Dr. Sahlu Mulu, coordinator of the social economy and value chain management sector at the Animal Development Institute, who spoke with Bisrat Radio, the product is widely used globally despite the industry’s many problems.

He asserted that one of the main reasons for the lack of competition on the global market is the poor quality.

Because the quality of the supply chain from the production of the milk product until it is brought to market was not maintained, the product was unable to compete on the global market. To address the problem, the cow’s milk quality chain is being kept up. To ensure that the businesses engaged in milk processing uphold the product’s quality and production standards, a number of initiatives are being implemented in Ethiopia.

Dr. Sahlu added that it includes control activities so that farmers can produce the good and transport it tothe product and deliver it to the processing facilities while maintaining the quality chain.

Forty of Ethiopia’s milk processing facilities have been given the highest level, while more than one hundred have been given the lowest.
