Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu’s tenure as secretary general of the Inter-Governmental Organisation for East African Development (IGAD) has been extended for a further four years. It was decided to keep the former foreign minister of Ethiopia in that position as IGAD’s secretary general. On Monday, June 5, 2015, the group gathered in Djibouti for its regular summit.
Dr. Workneh wrote on his official Twitter page after the leaders made their decision, “I feel deeply happy that the assembly has placed full trust in me and extended my term of office for a second 4 years.”
Dr. Workneh succeeded the Kenyan Mahbub Malim as IGAD Secretary General in November 2012.
the current IGAD meeting. The chairmanship’s authority, which is granted to each member country in turn, has also changed. The IGAD summit is being held in Djibouti today, after Sudan held the position for the previous four years. It should be noted that Ethiopia led IGAD for nine years prior to Sudan taking the helm.
The leaders of Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, South Sudan, and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed all attended the summit that was held in that country today.
