Dr. Yohannes Wogaso, Chief Executive for General Education at the Ministry of Education, confirmed that the curriculum launch aims to equip top-performing youth with critical language skills required for modern global engagement. Under a bilateral agreement established with the Chinese government, specialized language instructors from China will be stationed in Ethiopia to conduct the classes directly. Officials emphasized that foreign language proficiency is increasingly key to securing international academic scholarships and professional placements.
Admission to Ethiopia’s federal boarding schools remains highly competitive, accepting only students who achieve top percentile scores on national entrance examinations. The Ministry indicated that the integration of Chinese is part of a broader educational framework aimed at diversifying foreign language offerings. Moving forward, the government plans to introduce additional major international languages into the boarding school curriculum to provide a well-rounded linguistic foundation for high-ability learners.
The initiative highlights growing educational and cultural exchanges between East Africa and East Asia. In recent years, educational institutions in China have similarly expanded African language programs, offering instruction in Amharic, Swahili, and other regional tongues to university students.
