Addis Ababa City Administration Approves 502.27 Billion Birr Draft Budget for 2019 EFY

The Addis Ababa City Administration Cabinet has officially approved a draft budget of 502.27 billion Birr for the upcoming 2019 Ethiopian Fiscal Year (EFY). The decision was reached during a regular cabinet meeting held on June 19, 2026 (Sene 12, 2018 EFY). The approved draft budget has now been referred to the City Council for final review and endorsement.

According to official statements, the newly approved budget is structured to heavily prioritize social and economic development. A dominant 71% of the total allocation is dedicated to poverty reduction programs and the execution of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The remaining 29% of the multi-billion Birr budget has been earmarked to cover ongoing administrative expenses across the city.

The strategic focus of the 2019 budget primarily targets the expansion of job creation initiatives and the improvement of critical infrastructure. Significant funds will be funneled into municipal projects, including the construction and maintenance of roads, water supply systems, residential housing, and public transport networks. Efforts to enhance the quality of education and healthcare services also remain central to the plan.

Furthermore, the fiscal plan incorporates targeted subsidies designed to cushion low-income residents from rising economic pressures. The total approved funds are expected to be distributed among central sector institutions and sub-cities to effectively implement both recurrent operations and major capital projects.

City officials emphasize that the budget aims to balance infrastructure modernization with essential social safety nets. Independent analysts note that the successful implementation of this substantial budget will depend on efficient resource management and the city’s capacity to generate its projected internal revenues.
