Ethiopian Orthodox Scholar Memhir Zelalem Wendemu Passes Away in Washington, D.C.

Memhir Zelalem Wendemu, a prominent teacher and preacher within the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, has passed away. Reports confirmed that the scholar died yesterday following a brief illness while on a religious service mission in the United States. His death marks the end of a ministry that spanned more than three decades, during which he became a well-known figure both in Ethiopia and among the diaspora.
Memhir Zelalem, who was in his early sixties, was recognized for his long-standing service to the Church. Throughout his career, he traveled extensively, providing spiritual teachings in the capital city of Addis Ababa, various rural provinces of Ethiopia, and several countries across Europe and North America. He was specifically noted for his focus on Christian ethics and the practical application of religious doctrine in daily life.

Sources close to the family told Fide Post the teacher had traveled to Washington, D.C., to fulfill a preaching engagement. He reportedly fell ill during his stay and passed away after three days of medical care. Efforts are currently underway to repatriate his remains to Ethiopia, with the body expected to arrive in Addis Ababa within the coming week for final funeral arrangements.
The upcoming funeral is expected to be attended by high-ranking officials of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, including members of the Holy Synod and the Patriarch. Given his influence and the size of his following, a large gathering of clergy, deacons, and laity is anticipated to pay their final respects. Memhir Zelalem is survived by his family, including his brother, Adnew Wendemu, who also serves within the church.
In addition to his pulpit ministry, Memhir Zelalem utilized digital platforms to reach a broader audience. Alongside his brother, he maintained a YouTube presence where he archived numerous sermons and spiritual lessons. His teaching style was frequently characterized by colleagues and followers as punctual, concise, and accessible, often emphasizing that spiritual life must be demonstrated through conduct rather than words alone.
While Memhir Zelalem maintained a private business for his livelihood, he was widely known for refusing financial compensation for his preaching services. His legacy within the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church remains tied to his 30-year commitment to education and his advocacy for moral integrity within the faith. Further details regarding the specific location and timing of the funeral service in Addis Ababa are expected to be released by the Church in the coming days.
