Yonas Birhane Mewa, the Guma Film Awards manager who was arrested by the police, was apparently released from prison today. Yonas was brought before the court of first instance in Addis Abeba and released on a 5,000 Birr bail before the federal police took custody of him. The Addis Abeba police would accuse Yonas of engaging in political activity that “incites the people against the government.” The Ethiopian Human Rights Commissioner, Daniel Bekele, called Yonas’ arrest “illegal and unacceptable” on his social media page yesterday and urged that he be released “immediately and unconditionally.”
