The Ethiopian Orthopaedic Association (BOSAD), a research organisation, has organised and declared that it has carried out a study on the role of traditional medicine in bone and joint injuries as well as the treatment-related problems that require improvement.

According to the study’s findings, it is typical to see a large number of patients visiting medical facilities on a daily basis who saw a traditional bone setter following relatively small bone and joint injuries and were exposed to a variety of complicated health issues. According to the study, these complicated health problems have been shown to result in complications that range from curable illnesses to long-term physical disabilities and even death. The study’s findings, which showed an alarming prevalence of victimisation, particularly among youngsters, rural residents, and low-income community segments, were covered by a number of news sites and included in expert interviews, sparking community discussion.

Traditional bone setting has traditionally been seen as a generation-to-generation family business in many parts of Ethiopia. Many people believe that traditional bone setting is a skill that requires less experience from professionals. It has been noted that some traditional bone setters lack both inherited professional expertise and formal technical training. When treating patients with fractures, joint misalignment, and dislocations, these conventional bone setters are frequently observed using mimicry and other unethical techniques.
Patients have been shown to become disabled and die as a result of this. According to reports, the group is conducting training and workshops with different stakeholders with the aim of bridging the gap between modern and traditional orthopaedic medicine. With more than 600 specialist and subspecialist physicians under its auspices, the Ethiopian Orthopaedic Association is a powerful national professional organisation that coordinates its members to support numerous scientific studies and research projects around the nation and offers professional leadership.
