Ethiopia opens its first refractive surgery centre in the country’s history of eye care

Ethiopia opens its first refractive surgery centre in the country’s history of eye care.

The centre is a speciality clinic for bright eyes and is reputed to offer the most advanced and cutting-edge refractive surgery procedures. According to reports, the medical centre, which has been in the business for the last 15 years, will operate on the cornea, a portion of the eye.

The primary objective of treatment is to restore the outer part of the cornea, which comprises two-thirds of the visual focus, to its former shape. The facility anticipates finishing the surgery in a few minutes. Reducing the issue for those who wear near and far vision glasses is the main goal of the treatment. For example, a number of young people who have had the problem since childhood have finished the treatment and given stage testimonies.

The recently opened Bright Eye Speciality Eye Surgery Centre will provide a unique contribution, according to the forum, since eye disease is one of the health problems that our country’s society is dealing with, especially in rural areas. Despite the various efforts of the Ministry of Health, commercial institutions, and partner organisations, the medical field of eye care in Ethiopia confronts many challenges. Particularly in Ethiopia, experts consider eyesight loss to be a severe problem.

A national survey on Orbis indicates that 3.6 percent of Ethiopians have impaired vision and 1.6 percent are blind. Although blindness can have numerous causes, cataracts cause 50% of instances, with trachoma (11%), corneal issues (8%), refractive errors (8%), and glaucoma (5%), following closely behind. According to experts, the two main causes of vision impairment are refractive errors (33%) and cataracts (42%).

The Buru Eye Speciality Surgery Centre, which officially opened today, focusses on refractive surgery as one of the previously mentioned causes of eye issues.

Among the most common causes of blindness and low vision impairments in Ethiopia are refractive astigmatism, nearsightedness, and associated visual problems. It was stated during the inauguration ceremony that the opening of the Buru Refractive Surgery Speciality Centre will greatly contribute to the problem’s resolution and the modernisation of the sector.
