While there is debate about Ethiopia’s port access, the major general of Somaliland is in Addis, and the president of Somalia is in Eritrea

A high-level delegation led by Major General Nuh Ismail Tani, the chief of staff of the Somaliland Armed Forces, was received at the defence headquarters in Addis Ababa by Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, the chief of staff of Ethiopia’s armed forces, and other senior military officials.

The social media page of the Ethiopian Defence Force has information indicating that the two military commanders discussed issues related to military cooperation.

Remember that the President of Somaliland and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed just signed a memorandum of friendship and cooperation.

The two military commanders met to organise coordinated efforts to improve military cooperation between the two sides.

The meeting focuses on strengthening ties between the armed forces as Somaliland works to reconstruct its institutions.

On Monday, January 1, 2024, Somaliland and Ethiopia signed “a historic” Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which served as the backdrop for the visit.

Muse Bihi Abdi, the president of Somaliland briefed delegates from ten political organisations on the “historic” Memorandum of Understanding inked with Ethiopia.

Instead of leasing a seaport, Somaliland has decided to lease Ethiopia a naval base, according to Saed Hassan, general manager of Somaliland ports, in an interview with a local television station.

He claims that Ethiopia will transport its goods via Berber’s port.

In related news, the Federal Republic of Somalia’s president, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, arrived in Asmara early this afternoon for a two-day working visit.

As soon as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his delegation landed at the Asmara International Airport, President Isaias Afwerki greeted them with warmth.

The two presidents, Isaias Afwerki and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, will talk about how to strengthen their bilateral relationship as well as regional and global issues that both countries find interesting.
